Spotify’s Lossless Audio Tier May Finally Be On the Way—New App Code Offers Hope
After over four years of delays, Spotify’s long-teased lossless audio tier might finally be on the verge of launching. New references discovered in the latest version of Spotify’s app have reignited hopes that high-fidelity music streaming will soon become a reality for its millions of users.
Tech expert and reverse engineer Chris Messina recently uncovered code in Spotify’s desktop build mentioning a new “lossless” option. Help cards in the app reference “lossless music, now in premium,” and describe audio quality reaching up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, confirming prior expectations for CD-quality streaming.
Lossless Streaming with a Catch
The code also includes messages alerting users that some songs may not be available in lossless, and that wired connections or Spotify Connect-compatible devices offer the best experience. This mirrors similar strategies from Apple Music and Tidal, which require proper hardware for maximum audio fidelity.
Meanwhile, Reddit user u/bendotlc spotted similar clues in the latest mobile app version. Strings like “Say hello to the best sound quality on Spotify” and references to a lossless setting hidden in the app were later confirmed by data analytics firm Appsensa, suggesting internal testing is already underway.
Spotify HiFi’s Long Delay: Licensing Woes and Missed Timelines
Spotify first announced its high-fidelity Spotify HiFi tier in 2021, but it has yet to materialize. Executives have repeatedly pointed to licensing complications as a primary reason for the delay. However, in early 2025, Spotify reportedly signed new deals with major labels like Universal Music Group and Warner Music, potentially clearing a path for launch.
Although no firm release date has been given, Spotify Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom told investors during Q1 2025 earnings that the company is working on “higher tiers” designed to satisfy “super fans” with exclusive premium features.
A Premium ‘Music Pro’ Tier in the Works?
According to Bloomberg, Spotify may release a Music Pro tier later in 2025, which could include not just lossless streaming but also remixing tools and other high-end features. While Spotify hasn’t officially confirmed this, the code leaks suggest that something significant is brewing.
Whether it’s called Spotify HiFi, Music Pro, or something entirely new, one thing is clear: the demand for better audio quality hasn’t gone away, and Spotify appears closer than ever to delivering on that promise.
