Google to End Support for Early Nest Thermostats, Halt New Nest Launches in Europe
Google has announced it will officially end support for its first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. Devices released in 2011 and 2012, along with the European model launched in 2014, will no longer receive software updates or be supported through the Nest and Home apps.
However, users will still be able to manually adjust temperature and schedules directly on their thermostat units.
In a statement, Google explained the decision by saying it wants to “fully invest in future advancements” and deliver the latest features to its newest generation of Nest thermostats. “Each of the affected devices is over a decade old,” the company noted.
In addition to ending software support, Google revealed it will cease launching new Nest thermostats in Europe. The tech giant cited the complex diversity of European heating systems as a major challenge, making it difficult to build thermostats that meet the varied hardware and software requirements across the region.
Existing Nest thermostats will still be available in Europe while supplies last.
Background and Market Impact
The first Nest Learning Thermostat, released in 2011, was one of the earliest and most innovative smart home devices. Over the years, Nest became a flagship product line for Google in the connected home market.
However, as heating technologies vary significantly from country to country in Europe, supporting a unified Nest model has become increasingly complex and resource-intensive.
Although European customers won’t see new Nest thermostats in the future, Google remains committed to enhancing its newer thermostat models in North America and other regions where standardization is easier.
