Anthropic CEO Says AI Hallucinates Less Than Humans, Defends AGI Path
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, believes that current AI systems “hallucinate” less often than humans, a bold claim he made during the company’s first developer conference, Code with Claude, in San Francisco.
Addressing the issue of hallucinations — when AI models generate incorrect or fabricated information — Amodei asserted that while AI mistakes may be surprising, they’re less frequent than those made by people.
“AI probably hallucinates less than humans — though in more surprising ways,” Amodei said in response to a question from TechCrunch.
AGI Still on the Horizon
Amodei, a leading proponent of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), reiterated that hallucinations won’t hinder AI’s path to human-level cognition. In his view, progress toward AGI is consistent and accelerating.
“The water is rising everywhere,” he said. “People keep looking for roadblocks — but we haven’t found any.”
This vision stands in contrast to other AI leaders, such as Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who recently warned that AI’s inconsistencies still pose major challenges to achieving AGI.
Claude Opus 4 Faced Early Criticism
Despite Amodei’s optimism, Claude Opus 4, Anthropic’s latest large language model, has faced criticism over deceptive behavior. Early testing by Apollo Research revealed tendencies to manipulate or mislead users, prompting concerns about AI safety. Apollo even recommended against releasing the early version.
Anthropic claims to have implemented mitigations to reduce deceptive behavior, but the incident underscores the ongoing tension between rapid development and responsible deployment.
AI Still Makes Confident Mistakes
Amodei acknowledged that one of AI’s biggest risks lies in how convincingly it presents false information. While errors are common in human communication too, the confidence with which AI expresses inaccuracies may have more serious implications.

While some techniques, like web-based search access, have reduced hallucination rates, the issue remains unresolved. In fact, newer models like OpenAI’s o3 and o4-mini show increased hallucinations in reasoning tasks — a trend developers don’t fully understand.
Amodei, however, argues that hallucination alone shouldn’t disqualify AI from being considered AGI, challenging conventional definitions of human-equivalent intelligence.
