Tesla’s Optimus Robot Lead Milan Kovac Resigns

Tesla Optimus Robot program lead Milan Kovac announced his resignation, marking a key change for Tesla’s robotics project. Kovac became the program head in 2022 and was appointed Vice President last September. He shared the news on X, explaining he needs to spend more time with his family abroad.

“I’ve been away from home too long and need to be with family,” Kovac wrote. “This is the only reason for my departure.”

Bloomberg reported that Kovac left immediately. Ashok Elluswamy, who currently leads Tesla’s Autopilot teams, will replace him. Tesla and Elluswamy have not yet commented.

Kovac’s exit comes at a crucial time. Elon Musk has stressed the importance of the Tesla Optimus Robot and autonomy for Tesla’s future. In May, Musk told CNBC, “The only things that matter in the long term are autonomy and Optimus.”

Tesla plans to produce thousands of Optimus robots this year. However, Musk revealed in April that China’s export limits on rare-earth magnets slowed production. These magnets are vital parts of the robots.

Tesla is now focusing heavily on launching both the humanoid robots and its robotaxi service. Musk views these efforts as critical to Tesla’s long-term success.

The Tesla Optimus Robot aims to perform manual tasks using advanced AI. This project competes with other robotics firms like Boston Dynamics. Kovac’s departure may slow progress, but Elluswamy’s expertise could help.

Elluswamy’s background in Autopilot development might bring closer ties between Tesla’s driving AI and its robotics work. His leadership could steer the program through technical and supply challenges.

As the Tesla Optimus Robot program shifts under new leadership, Tesla faces high expectations. Investors and enthusiasts alike will watch how Elluswamy manages the next phase.
